Vienna Austria

Vienna doesn't hide anything. Every second building in the first district has a dome, a spire, or a gilded statue on the roofline, and the RX100 VII stayed in my jacket pocket for two days straight because there was always something worth stopping for. This is a simple set from that walk, no plan beyond following the skyline.

Domes, Spires, and Gold Leaf

Stephansdom sets the tone the moment you turn onto Stephansplatz. The Gothic spire is so tall it's easier to shoot from the side streets than head-on, so most of these were taken looking up between buildings rather than from the square itself. Karlskirche was half-wrapped in scaffolding when I got there, which somehow made the dome and the carved column out front stand out more.

The Hofburg is where the RX100 VII earned its keep. Zoomed all the way in on the golden eagle above the Neue Burg facade, then wide again for the equestrian statue below it. Vienna rewards looking up more than almost any city I've shot in.

Horses, Streets, and the Blue Hour

A pair of Fiaker horses parked outside a Manner shop turned into one of my favorite frames from the trip, matching red fly hoods and all. The State Opera is best shot wide from across the Ring, with the trams and the crowd still in frame. It's a working building, not a museum piece, and it reads better that way.

I saved the Parliament for last light on purpose. The Pallas Athena fountain lit up gold against a blue dusk sky is the kind of shot that makes the whole walk worth it, and it's the one I kept coming back to when picking the cover for this post.
