The smoothest road in Switzerland. Long, fast sweepers and minimal traffic make this ideal for all skill levels. The western descent through the Haslital valley is outstanding.

The legendary Tour de France climb. Less trafficked than the Stelvio, more dramatic than most. Chain it with the Col du Telegraphe and Col d'Izoard for an unforgettable French Alps day.

Passo Gavia narrow road Italy Extreme 🇮🇹
Experts Only Italy Jul–Sep

Passo Gavia

Elevation2,618m
SurfaceRough / narrow
WidthSingle track
Drop RiskHigh

Narrow, rough, and spectacular. The north approach is barely two lanes with sheer drops and no barriers. Not for the faint-hearted or unfamiliar bikes. If you're ready for it, nothing else compares.

No passes match your filters. Try adjusting the country or difficulty.

Field Notes

Ride Early

Most passes are at their best before 9am. Coaches, cyclists and cars arrive from 10am. An early start means empty roads, cooler air, and better light for photos.

🌧

Weather Changes Fast

Above 2,000m, conditions can change in under 30 minutes. Always carry rain gear regardless of forecast. Afternoon thunderstorms are common June–August across all Alpine regions.

Fuel Before the Pass

Summit cafes don't sell fuel. Fill up in the last valley town before climbing. On routes like the Gavia or Furka, the next station can be 60–80km away via the only alternative road.

🏍

Tyre Temperature

Cold early mornings mean cold tyres. Ride the first 10km gently until the rubber is up to temperature — especially on shadowed north approaches where tarmac stays cold all morning.

📱

Download Offline Maps

Mobile signal disappears on most high passes. Download your route in Gaia GPS or Maps.me before you leave. Swiss passes especially have zero coverage for long stretches.

🏨

Book Hotels in Advance

Valley towns at pass bases fill quickly in peak season. Lana, Bormio, Innsbruck, and Andermatt are the key overnight stops — book at least 2 weeks ahead in July and August.
