My Number

In September 2026 the KTM Europe Adventure Rally came to Gubbio, the medieval stone town on the edge of the Umbrian Apennines. 250 riders, sold out, and three days of loops from one base camp, each with a Blue, Red and Black option. I rode it as number 58. Umbria is not where most adventure riders go in Italy; the Dolomites and Tuscany get the attention. That is exactly why it worked: white gravel roads, olive groves, empty ridges, and the Apennines close enough to ride into every day.

Gubbio: Base Camp

Base camp was set up at the Teatro Romano car park, right in the heart of Gubbio, below the hills: a field of orange KTM tents with registration, KTM factory mechanics, the factory rally display, and a long dining tent where the whole rally sat down together every evening. Every loop started and finished here, so the camp became home for the week. MOTOREX and Mitas, the rally's long-time partners, were there too.

The mix of bikes covered the whole KTM adventure range, from the 390 to the 1390 Super Adventure R, all tagged with race numbers and parked in rows between the tents.

Three Levels: Blue, Red, Black

Each daily loop came in three levels, chosen at the morning briefing depending on conditions and confidence. It is the same idea as a ski resort: the same mountains, different lines through them.

Route Level

Blue

Mostly prepared gravel roads. No technical sections. For every adventure rider.

Route Level

Red

Adds single-track and technical sections. Off-road experience needed.

Route Level

Black

Enduro trails with real technical difficulty. Experienced riders only.

Day One · September 8, 2026

West to Lake Trasimeno

156.7 km Highest point 844 m 4,019 m climbed 4 h 34 riding Heart rate avg 135 · max 194 bpm

Day one started the way every KTM rally starts: under the Red Bull arch, one rider at a time. From Gubbio the route went onto gravel almost straight away and headed west towards Lake Trasimeno, Italy's fourth largest lake: through farmland and past old stone farmhouses, then up onto dusty hilltop tracks with all of Umbria laid out below. 157 kilometres and 4,019 metres of climbing, which says a lot about how rarely Umbria is flat. My Garmin agrees: it was the hardest day of the three on my heart, averaging 135 bpm and peaking at 194.

For the Black route riders, parts of the day used sections of the Italian Hard Enduro Championship. Umbrian gravel has its own character: hard-packed and fast where it is used, loose and dusty on the climbs, and always framed by oak trees and terracotta hill towns.

Assisi and Monte Subasio: 222 km

221.8 km · longest day Highest point 1,299 m 7,044 m climbed 5 h 43 riding Heart rate avg 113 · max 166 bpm

The second day was the big one: 222 kilometres south through Umbria and 7,044 metres of climbing, following the land of St. Francis. Through Gualdo Tadino, up to the highest point of the whole rally at 1,299 metres on Monte Subasio, and down into Assisi itself.

Much of it ran through olive country: fast white gravel between the trees, a cloud of dust hanging behind every bike, and corners that look like they were designed for photos. Then the viewpoints, where you stop for a minute just to look across the valley before the next section.

Monte Foce and the Apennines

144.9 km Highest point 1,038 m 4,660 m climbed 3 h 52 riding Heart rate avg 113 · max 179 bpm

The shortest day on paper, 145 kilometres, but the one that went vertical: 4,660 metres of climbing. Straight up Monte Foce above Gubbio, then north through the Apennines past Cantiano towards Monte Nerone.

Ridge tracks with clouds sitting on the peaks, groups strung out along the trail, views back over Gubbio, and long white gravel roads through the forest on the way down to the closing evening at base camp.

Dakar Riders and Factory Bikes

KTM brought the rally department to Gubbio. The Red Bull factory rally bikes stood in the paddock with their race numbers on and the mechanics' tools laid out next to them, close enough to study every detail. KTM also showed the new 690 Rally.

Better still, the Dakar riders were on the trails with everyone else. This edition I got to ride with Luciano Benavides and Edgar Canet; after Romania, it was my second rally sharing the route with Edgar.
